Ginger is used for treating various health conditions, one of them being arthritis. According to researchers from the University of Miami, ginger extract is an excellent alternative to anti-inflammatory and non-steroidal drugs or NSAIDs.
Researchers conducted a study on 247 people suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. They divided the participants into two groups and gave ginger extract to those from the first group. The results showed that the ginger extract decreased participants’ knee pain and stiffness by 40 percent, in comparison with the placebo group.
So, why is ginger so effective in reducing the symptoms of arthritis?
The vice chair of the Department of Integrative Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York, Roberta Lee, MD, explains that ginger can be used as an alternative remedy for arthritis thanks to its potent anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, and antioxidant effects.
Ways to Use Ginger
1. Add It to Your Meals
The Journal of Pain reported that the researchers at the Georgia State College and University in Milledgeville and University in Georgia in Athens recommend adding few tablespoons of grated ginger to your salad or stir-fry to ease your muscle pain after a workout or other physical activity.
Moreover, you can boost your daily meals with some fresh ginger. Mince it and sauté it hot oil with other healthy ingredients.
Also, you can add it to your stews and soups to enhance their taste and smell.
2. Ginger Drink
- 1 inch grated ginger
- 2 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 of honey
- 1 cup of water
Boil the water and add the ginger. Continue to boil for ten minutes and then strain. Next, add the lemon juice and honey and mix well.
How to Consume
Drink two to three cups of this ginger beverage a day until the pain reduces.
3. Ginger Oil Massage
Thanks to the potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, ginger essential oil is great aid in the treatment of arthritis. Massage the painful area and the oil will act on the vanilloid receptors found on the nerve endings of sensory nerves.
In this way, the oil will significantly relieve your arthritis pain.
- 3-4 drops of ginger oil
- 2 tbsp. of extra virgin olive oil
Heat the olive oil for about three minutes and then add the ginger oil. Stir well, and let the oil mixture cool down before applying it on your skin. Massage the aching joints and muscles for ten to fifteen minutes at least once or twice a day.
You can add half a teaspoon of turmeric in the oil mixture to further boost its effects.
