Chia Seed and Its Side Effects! – Medical Research

Today, chia seeds has a reputation that encourages weight loss and reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer.

But, there are potential side effects that needed to be discussed with your doctor before adding chia seeds to your diet.

Chia seed is probably safe when taken by mouth up to 12 weeks and when applied to the skin up to 8 weeks. Not enough is known about the safety of its use over a long period.

Impact on weight loss: Chia seeds are a rich source of soluble fiber. Therefore possess hydrophilicproperties. When immersed in water ,it can absorb as much as 12 times more than its own volume. Thus,this seed may suppress appetite, causing a feeling of fullness. There is no clinical evidence to substantiatethe claim that chia seeds stimulates weight loss.

Constipation and diarrhea: Some people have reported that they got constipation, bloating and gas, after consuming chia seeds.

Allergies: People who are allergic to mustard seeds (mustard) can also have adverse effects to chia seeds.

Effects on blood coagulability: Since it is known that chia seeds are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids,people who take aspirin and anticoagulants, hemophiliacs or those planning to undergo surgery should refrain from consuming chia seed.

Аddiction: Some experts advise not to take large quantities of chia seed, because it can have an addictive effect (causing addiction).

Pregnant and lactating women: The use of chia seed is not recommended for pregnant and lactating women, without any medical tests made on them.

Blood Pressure: A study of Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has shown that supplementation with chia seed significantly reduced the number of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in individuals with type II diabetes. The effects included reductions in blood pressure and levels of C-reactive protein (an indicator of the existence of inflammation).

However, the study also suggest that these results show that chia seeds can increase the effects of antihypertensive drugs. So if you are taking such medications or have other cardiovascular risks, it is best to consult a doctor before taking chia seeds.
