How to Make Your Own Mouthwash

This is  what is in mouthwash that we use, and it is extremely toxic to us:

1. Chlorhexidine

Studies published in the Journal of International Academy of Periodontology have suggested that even a small exposure to Chlorhexidine can lead to symptoms including headaches, euphoria, blurred vision, which can last up to eight hours after ingesting. This chemical can also kill off the good bacteria in the body, and this affects blood vessels maintain blood pressure.

2. Alcohol

The presence of alcohol in mouthwash can have devastating effects on the liver. Alcohol in mouthwash can change the PH of the mouth and lead to bad breath. According to the Dental Journal of Australia, alcohol in mouthwash can“contribute to the increased risk of development of oral cancer”.

3. Hexetidine

This chemical often found in mouthwash, can lead to skin, eye, and respiratory irritations. This chemical has also been known to cause blood clots, an unstable heartbeat, and allergic reactions.

4. Methyl Salicylate

Methyl Salicylate when it comes into contact with skin can lead to symptoms including hives, itching, wheezing, swelling of the face and coughing.

5. Methylparaben

This nasty chemical is found in mouthwash but also in cosmetics and deodorants. It has been known to have carcinogenic properties and has been found in breast cancer tissues. It can also affect the quality of sperm, which can lead to fertility issues.


The good news is that you can make your own mouthwash. It’s better for your body, your wallet and your peace of mind.

DIY Mouthwash

What you need:

  • 1.5 liters of water
  • 7 tablespoons of green tea
  • A strainer
  • A large bottle
  • A large bowl

What you need to do:

  1. Boil the water, and measure the tea out and add it to the water.
  2. Leave the mixture for an hour
  3. Using the strainer pour the mixture into the large bottle. This should then be stored in the fridge.
  4. If you fancy a minty mouthwash, add some dried peppermint at the same time you add the green tea.
