As much as we love summer, the pesky mosquitoes and other creatures that come with it simply cannot be neglected. Not only do mosquitoes cause troubles when we try to enjoy outdoors, but the recent Zika virus epidemic is yet another reason to ward off these pests.
Even though the store-bought sprays are effective at keeping these pests at bay, many of them contain DEET, a chemical which has been found to cause various health issues, such as skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even nervous system interference.
Natural Bug Repellents
Although most commercial bug repellents contain harmful substances, there are many natural foods and compounds that produce scents that can effectively repel insects.
Lemon eucalyptus essential oil, which is extracted from the leaves of the lemon eucalyptus tree has been proven throughout various studies to be effective at repelling mosquitoes.
According to a study, substances obtained from the peel of citrus fruits like limes, tangerines, grapefruits, oranges, and lemons also repel mosquitoes and other insect. In other words, the strong smell of citrus fruits is extremely effective at keeping mosquitoes away without causing side effects.
