As far back as 450BC, celery was widely in use. The Romans made wine out of the stalks. Over time, celery began to be used in a variety of soups and stews. High in fiber, celery is a great diet food.
Some people even follow the celery diet, which involves eating as much celery as you can in a day!
However, there are some side effects to eating celery that you should know about. Here they are:
1. It Can Cause An Allergy
We don’t often hear of plant foods as being allergy-causing but, celery can cause a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. If you notice hives, redness of the skin and throat, itching or a swelling of the throat right after eating celery, rush to the ER (Emergency Room) immediately.
2. It Can Make You Drowsy
Celery is rich in plant compounds known as phthalides, which are known to cause drowsiness. It is because of this reason that excessive amounts of celery can make you feel sleepy, an unwanted side effect especially if you drive or operate heavy machinery.
3. It Is A Contraceptive And May Also Cause Miscarriage
In ancient Egypt, celery was used as a contraceptive. While this effect is not always bad, you need to keep this in mind if you’re trying to conceive.
Another unwanted side effect of celery is that if consumed in large quantities, it may cause a miscarriage in pregnant women.
4. It Can Cause Skin Inflammation
If you are prone to skin inflammation and eruptions, eating celery can make the symptoms even worse. What’s more, celery can also worsen or cause a fresh flare up of dermatitis.
5. It Can Slow Your Nervous System
As discussed above, celery can cause drowsiness due to phthalides present in it. In studies done in cats, phthalide compounds caused a hampering of signals that travel from the spine.
