In fact, registered dietitian Jenny Champion says that more than half of us report drinking alcohol on a monthly basis. “Occasional drinking has been said to improve health,” she says. “But frequent binging at happy hour with co-workers doesn’t.”

Not to freak you out, but according to biochemist Dr. Barry Sears, creator of the Zone diet, alcohol’s negative impact on the body can include everything from inflammatory effects on your organs to potential damage to your DNA. Drinking in excess can also put you at risk for certain cancers, diabetes, and liver disease, among other grim conditions. “Aside from the serious dangers of drinking too much, there are also a number of other not-so-pleasant effects,” adds Champion, “including lousy moods, crazy sugar cravings, excess calories, liver fat, poor sleep habits, dry skin, and foggy concentration.”

We know, huge bummer. But here’s a giant ray of hope: Our bodies can actually bounce back from alcohol’s negative effects at amazing speeds.As in a matter of hours. And the longer you go without drinking, the stronger and healthier your body and skin become.

    I quit drinking alcohol for my workout routine. I figured as hard as I was working to lose weight and belly fat and get in shape why would I even think of putting those extra sugars and calories in my body. I have experienced all of the benefits as laid out in this article. Water is just fine thank you.

    I believe you need to go a little further with your information. People who drink heavily are at risk for DT’s if they quit drinking abruptly. Delirium tremens is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal. It includes confusion, hallucinations and even seizures. This can cause death.

      You’re exactly right!
      I drank very heavily for years and medical detox was my only choice. Even that closely supervised, it was hell! That’s been over eight years ago and I haven’t touched a drop since.

    So they are using the same tactics they used against smokers now, but now they are going for the drinkers LOL

    Told you it was coming booze hounds. Us smokers warned you.. hahaha

    Oh well I dont drink, so now I can be all self righteous and wave my hands like crazy when I see you opening a beer 200 feet away from me as “the smell is horrible” and now i can call you drinkers “addicts”
